Replacement Battery

In the last two parts of this series, I covered the factors of temperature and charging. While the high temperatures inside modern laptops are probably the worst enemy of a Li-ion Dell Inspiron 1525 battery, frequent discharge/charge cycles will negatively influence a battery’s life. If your laptop is a desktop replacement, then you probably only need the battery every now and then. It can be quite frustrating if you want to use your laptop for the first time after a year without AC, only to realize that your batteries are already dead even though you never really used them. However, if you remove the inspiron 1525 battery from the laptop and store it accurately, there is a good chance that it will be in good condition when you need it next time.
Don’t store a battery that is almost empty. Stored Dell Inspiron 1525 batteries continue losing energy, albeit at a much slower pace. If the stored battery is totally discharged, it could be destroyed.
Don’t store a fully charged battery. Fully charged batteries deteriorate faster than half-charged batteries. Most articles I’ve read recommended storing laptop batteries with a 40–60% charge.
Store the battery at a low temperature. I usually put it in the fridge. It keeps my laptop battery fresh and crisp. Check out this table at Wikipedia. 0°C (32°F) seems to be the best storage temperature. I wouldn’t put the battery in the freezer even though Li-ion batteries only freeze at approximately 40°C.
Store the battery in a dry place. A moist environment will accelerate discharging the battery.
Check the Dell Inspiron 1525 battery state every now and then. I would remove it from the fridge at least every 30 days to calibrate it (fully discharge and charge).
Let the battery warm up a little before you put it back into your laptop. If the temperature is raised too fast, it will strain the battery.
When I started this article, I thought I’d just share a few tips I’ve found on the web. But then I realized that there are quite a few things that can be done wrong with laptop batteries. That’s how I ended up with three articles. It is quite amazing that we can build space ships that have enough energy to fly to the moon but still have no decent portable energy sources for simple laptops. Perhaps fuel cells will change the picture in a few years.

“it has alot of good stuff in it, but alot of that will use some good amount of battery. hp is great i’m guessing around 4 hours hp dv7 battery life. LISTEN ONCE YOU BUY THE PC CHECK THE MANUAL FOR BATTERY MAINTENECE if you don’t charge it right you will kill the battery. if you are gonna leave it at home on a desk, take out the battery and just plug in the laptop, so you dont drain the battery by accident.”

“I got my dv7 almost 2 years ago. Overall it works pretty well. It’s fast and I don’t think I’ve had any problem with software or bugs that couldn’t be cured by making sure everything is updated, uninstalling something or the running of free spyware.

The picture when watching videos is pretty clear and sharp. I have no problems using the mouse, but my mom has some difficulty and most older people I know who have tried it have a hard time with it, while my generation (collage age) have had no problem. Maybe it’s just harder in general for people with old eyes and not so great hand-eye-coordination? The common complaint of theirs was that the mouse is too fast.

The hp pavilion dv7 battery needs to be replaced (it lasts for only about 2 hours), but from what I’ve been told they tend to need to be replaced after 2 years anyway. I had an issue with the laptop ac adapter, but HP replaced that no problem. The panel started to separate where the hp battery charger plugs into the computer but HP fixed that, although in the process I think they messed up some wires somewhere b/c my computer went wonky the first time I turned it on after I got it back and it didn’t register my hp pavilion dv7 charger, which worked fine on my brother’s computer. I talked to HP customer service and they’re going to fix it for free so I guess it’s not that big of a deal.

The bottom of the computer and charger both can get VERY hot. Every now and then the fan gets kind of loud, but so far it seems to happen at random and it’s never enough to really disturb me.

I think the extended warranty is helpful if you intend to have the laptop for a while. I just bought it b/c if my computer wasn’t already covered this issue would have cost over $300. As it gets older there will probably be more problems so I’m sure it will come in handy.

I bought this to replace my 1 year old dell vostro 1710 batteries. At first, I did some research to compare this battery with the ones sold by Dell. There wasn’t much information on the internet regarding Replacement batteries. batterywood.com is a battery manufacturer. I decided to try these out because the price was within my budget;

Performance:

This Replacement dell vostro 1710 battery is as good as the Dell-Branded ones made by Sanyo Corporation. I get roughly 3-4 hours out of it with WiFi on, screen dimmed, and moderate web-surfing. I am dual-booting Windows 7 RC 7100 and Windows Vista. I get about 20-35 minutes more with Windows 7. I think the new Operating System is much more efficient with managing windows resources compared to the bloated Vista.

I hope this review helps someone that’s deciding on buying replacement batteries. Dell batteries are clearly overpriced.

Let’s see…an original 56Wh Dell T118C battery (this is NOT a third-party knock-off) for 1/3 Dell’s price. What’s not to love about this deal?! Whether or not it provides enough endurance is your call. As an Vostro 1710 owner, I can say this battery provides about 3 hrs of power. If you want about 4.5-5hrs, go for a nine-cell.
