A laptop power supply – also known as an A/C adapter and power brick – serves in the exact same capacity as a desktop or tower power supply in that it converts alternating current into direct current which your computer can then use. Most power bricks had an LED light that illuminates to let you know when power is available. However, even though the light may be illuminated on the power brick, there may not be enough voltage to actually charge the laptop due to damage, burn-out, or another reason. With an Ohm Meter, you can easily test an A/C adapter to see if it is supplying enough voltage.

Instructions
1.

Plug the A/C adapter directly into a wall outlet. Make sure the power cable is securely inserted into the power brick.

On the Ohm Meter, plug the red wire into the slot marked with a + sign -this is positive. Plug the black wire into the slot marked with a – sign – this is negative. Make sure to plug the ends in without the plastic handles.

Set the Ohm Meter to DCV (Direct Current Voltage) and make sure it is set to a number higher than the voltage listed on the power supply. Usually you will set the Ohm meter to the number 50.
5.

Place the tip of the of the black conductor on the outside edge of the Toshiba PA3468E adapter.
6.

Place the tip of the red conductor inside the adapter.
7.

To verify if power is being supplied, look at the needle reading; it should land on the voltage marking near the voltage listed on the back of the power supply.

How to Repair a Notebook Battery Charger

If your laptop charger cable has suddenly stopped working it is likely the result of a short in the wire. If you have some extra time on your hands, you can find this short and try to repair the cable yourself. You’ll save money by not buying a whole new charger cable and the process doesn’t require very much knowledge of electronics.

Turn on your notebook computer and plug the adapter cord into the port on the computer.

Run your finger along the length of the Samsung laptop adapter cable, pinching it as you go. When the LED light at the end of the adapter flashes on and off you have found the short in the wire.

Use the stripper portion at the top of your wire cutters to strip about an inch of sheath off of the cable where the short is. Be careful to only strip the sheath and not the wire.

Twist the frayed ends of the wires together to reestablish the connection.

Wrap electrical tape around the gap in the sheath, being sure to cover the gap completely.

If you own a laptop, you may at some point notice that its laptop adapter has failed or is deteriorating, with wires suddenly exposed. Over the last few years, Dell laptops have been known as being faulty, and the adapter is no exception. However, with the right tools, skill and caution, you can repair your adapter by yourself.

Instructions
Examine the LED light that is on when your Dell laptop’s adapter is plugged in and is in working condition. If the light blinks when you wiggle the power adapter while it’s plugged in, it means there is a problem, possibly a short in a wire inside it.

Turn off your Dell laptop and unplug the adapter as well. Then, open the Dell adapter’s clamshell case by using a 7mm flat-headed screwdriver, inserting it between the clamshell and the AC power socket (two- or three-pronged). Keep the blade close to the outer edge of the socket and twist clockwise and counter-clockwise alternately in an attempt to get the clamshell to pop open on either or both sides.

Use either the screwdriver or a 7-mm thin Swiss army knife to cut a crack along the edge of the clamshell, then utilize the blade to expand the crack by about an inch and a half. Separate the outer layer from the interior and tightly twist it.

Cut off the large choke, also known as a ferrite, on your Dell adapter if it is too close to the barrel connector. Use a wire stripper to do this so that you can strip the coax rather than having to sheath away with a cheap tool. Strip away about one inch of the outer sheath, then twist the braid shield together.

Use the knife to remove about 1/4 inch of the insulation from the center electrode and tightly twist it, using a soldering iron to seal the connector. Use electrical tape on it if your soldering is not perfect.

With some skill and much caution, you can repair your Dell laptop’s adapter.

How to Troubleshoot Laptop Charger Cords

A laptop can receive power from an AC power adapter or from rechargeable laptop batteries. Fix Your Laptop Charger

A laptop charger supplies a laptop with energy while it is plugged into an electrical outlet. The energy charges the computer’s battery while also powering the computer. There are several reasons a laptop charger may need repairs. For example, the charger may become frayed so that the plastic exposes the wiring.
