Dell Inspiron 1520 Battery Wont Charge

www.cheapbatteryshop.co.uk
ok, so my battery wont charge with the adapter connected to the computer. I’ve got two batteriesm neither charge, but one stays at 5%. The one at 5% with the adapter plugged in says 334hours 00min (5%)remaining. The time only goes down, never up. If i take the adapter out the computer shuts down.
Ive bought a new adapter to see if that was the problem it wasn’t. Not sure if ive burnt something on the mother board or if I need a new dell inspiron 1520 battery. I’ve had the battery and adapter both in all the time plugged in charging. Not sure if that would effect anything. Please Help

One of three things has happened – and its happened to your dell laptop battery. Either it has been over charged, over run (run until empty) or over heated.

Li-Ion batteries are extremely delicate in that they must be treated right. Running the battery down until it is nearly empty and then charging it puts a tremendous strain on it and damages the cells. This is the exact opposite to the old Ni-Cad batteries. Many people will tell you to discharge the batteries and charge them up as much as possible, but this is very wrong.

If you run your inspiron 1520 battery down low on a regular basis then you have killed it.

If you allow your battery to run down too low on even just a single occasion, it will have been damaged. Cells in laptop batteries are very rarely matched, which means that whilst 4 cells may be at 10%, 1 cell may only be at 6% and the last may be at 2%. This means that it is very easy to have a cell get to 0%. At that stage it will suffer from reverse polarity and that cell will never hold a charge again.

Over charging does not happen easily. However, if you leave your laptop plugged in for long periods of time whilst switched off, the trickle charge effect can over charge the cells for just the same reason given for reverse polarity above. Again, if a cell is overcharged it will never recover.

Finally heat. Li-Ion batteries degrade with heat. This means that if you allow them to operate at too high a heat for periods of time they will easily become damaged. A Li-Ion battery that has over heated will simply stop holding charge.

The basic end to this is simply that you will need to replace your dell inspiron 1520 battery.

In order to keep your batteries running as long as possible:
1- Do not run them down if you can help it. Better to recharge when your battery gets to 50% than lower.
2- Li-Ion batteries do not have ‘memory’ issues. NEVER discharge your battery to recharge it like you would do with a Ni-Cad battery.
3- Do not leave your laptop plugged in for extended periods of time when not in use.
4- If you use your laptop on the mains for long periods – it is better to remove the dell inspiron 1520 battery completely.
5- If you do have to use your laptop on battery power for long periods, set your laptop to auto-hibenate when your battery gets to about 15% (not 10% or 5%).

Also remove and replace your dell inspiron 1520 laptop battery (after shutting down). Sometimes connections need “exercise”, sometimes R&R will “reset”. >> Restart.

Depending on your operationg system, on most you can also ’right-click’ on the “desk top”; select ’Properties’; goto ’screen saver’; select ’power’ button.

>>> From here you can check &/or modify settings {CAREFUL}

Beyond this, I would get an experienced friend or go to Dell website for assistance. One of the reasons I used to recommend Dell for “newbies” that I assisted into ’Putr-land was that they are very good computers and they are good about helping buyers with problems.
