Q:

I have a Dell laptop; recently got a failure that Dell laptop battery could not charge normally. When plug power adapter, system displays that battery doesn’t charge normally, the power always keeps at a certain stable value, and as the continual running of system, power reduces continually, until system auto shuts down.

A:

Laptop battery could not charge

Failure features: after entering operation system, in the power management options, dell xps m1530 battery charging progress doesn’t increase or the battery charge light is out. Usually it is called “the battery doesn’t charge”. There are few situations causing this failure symptom probably:

(1) Power adapter is broken;

(2) Laptop battery is broken;

(3) Motherboard charge circuit is broken;

(4) BIOS is broken.

Judgments:

(1) Power adapter is broken, and then laptop has no power supply, while the power in laptop battery is also used up, so it could not charge. You can find a power adapter of the same brand and model to try, if it’s unavailable, find a multimeter to test the output voltage of the power adapter, check whether the output voltage specified on power adapter is normal or not.

(2) Whether laptop battery is broken, or motherboard charge circuit is broken or BIOS, you could hardly test by yourself. Suggest sending to professional repair store and asking professional technician engineer to test with special device.

(3) If your battery could discharge but not charge, then it’s less likely that Dell TK330 battery is broken.

Usual possibility is that motherboard charge circuit has something wrong, while discharge circuit is still OK. The most common case is that the power interface on motherboard is broken, but the cost of changing a new power interface is kind of cheap; as for more detailed method, please refer to the chapter of this book .

(4) If battery could not charge or discharge.

Then it’s quite likely that the inspiron 1520 battery is broken, and probably the motherboard charge circuit also has problem, or EC battery management module gets something wrong. Now what you can do is to find a good battery and install onto the laptop, judge whether the battery is broken, or the motherboard is broken; if it’s the problem of the battery, then it’s quite easy to deal with, just change a Dell GK479 Battery. But if it’s the problem of the motherboard, then you’d better to ask help from professional repair store, except you are quite familiar with laptop circuitry and with some repair experience. As for more detailed method, please refer to the chapter of this book
