HP and Compaq laptop lithium-ion batteries are overheating and injuring customers when they rupture, and Hewlett-Packard is trying to prevent additional occurrences by recalling them.

An earlier recall in May 2009 (70,000 batteries were recalled at that time) was made after two reports were made citing batteries overheating. But since that time, 38 additional reports have been made to the company and 11 minor injuries have been reported as well.

HP Malfunctioning Lithium-Ion Batteries Sold Separately

The malfunctioning HP and Compaq laptop batteries were sold separately from the computers, according to Hewlett-Packard. These laptop battery packs could be purchased online or in stores, just like the computers they were to be used to operate.

Hewlett-Packard has stated that both the computers and the laptop battery packs involved in the recall were purchased between the months of August 2007 and July 2008

We haven’t heard any tales of exploding batteries in quite some time, and we’re sure that’s in large part thanks to proactive battery recalls like the one HP has been running since about this time last year. However, it’s a little disconcerting that this recall keeps getting expanded. For the second time a new group of laptops are being added to the pile, entries from the Pavilion, Compaq Presario, and other lines manufactured between August of 2007 and May of 2008. We have the complete chart included below. If you’re included the bad news is that your aging laptop could explode and wipe out your entire neighborhood at any moment. But, the good news is… free replacement battery!
